Artist
SUZANNE HAZLETT

SUZANNE HAZLETT is a mixed media artist drawn to the nuances of texture, color, and light in nature and urban environments. She transforms those influences into her paintings by layering ground marble, wax, pigments, and glazes of oil paints onto wood panels. The final interaction of hue and substance yields visually atmospheric and physically tactile work.

ARTIST STATEMENT

My newest work has adopted a sense of wavelike dimensions. I am questioning the rigid, right-angled parameters limiting the visual narrative I want to create. Instead of coloring within the lines of the expected geometric squares and rectangles of panels and canvases, I build the substrates in my new work. I sketch curvilinear designs on paper and transfer those shapes to wood construction. I form the panels and then follow with my layering protocol of adding and subtracting what may be twenty or thirty strata of color and material. Molten and cold waxes, dry pigments, and oil paints help me express the sought-after character and composition. While I work, I intentionally rearrange the pieces and witness the observable conversations between them. The nature of these designs enables the collector to self-curate and engage in changing the visual dialogue in their own spaces.
